New Recording of Wilson Pickett & Steve cropper’s
“in the midnight hour” by Mike Skill
will be released on April 15, 2022
“In The Midnight Hour, a huge Soul song in 1965 from Wilson Pickett and Steve Cropper…. was straight up Soul.
In 1967 a rock group from Grosse Pointe Mi., neighbors to the far Eastside of Detroit, “The Wanted” a sort of High School Dance/ Frat party band turned “In The Midnight Hour” to a garage-y Rock single with its Psychedelic era sound with the “Fuzzed up” Guitar and teen party atmosphere…..I think every band in Detroit played the song including my first group, after I taught myself to play Guitar a year or so earlier!
The Wanted performed on the Teen TV Dance show “Swinging Time” with Robin Seymore and The Wanted version raced up the Detroit and Canadian Radio Charts to #1. The original Soul version was written by Wilson Pickett and Steve Cropper in 1965 at Memphis’ infamous Lorainne Motel, and Recorded at Stax Studios with backing by Booker T and the MG’S, w/ horns by the Barkays, also in Memphis.
When I recorded “In The Midnight Hour” I wanted to recreate the 1967 sound and party mood of ‘The Wanted’ original version with Vox Jaguar organ and “Maestro Fuzz” Guitar..
